Our Children

Today, Ashraya has 75 residential students and 200 day care students, most of whom are either physically or mentally challenged. The children are taught to be independent individuals, irrespective of the disability they have. The basic idea is to make sure each one can take care of themselves. This also involves treating all the childrens equal. They all follow a routine. They attend school, which is a part of Ashraya. Each senior students is incharge of atleast 3 of the younger ones. Ashraya has around 7 domestic helpers and 12 teachers. They are given similar reinforcements, positive and negative. Most of the senior students are undergoing a vocational course in screen printing, most of the younger ones enjoy painting. They make greeting cards and are also taught basic tailoring, During Diwali (Indian Festival), we buy clay diyas (Lamps). They paint various designs and pattern on them before they are sold.
